Photography 101

(...or rather, I have no clue about Photography, 1 oh 1)

So...for my birthday this year, I got a Canon EOS Rebel T5 18MP EF-S Digital SLR Camera, and I'm still pretty much completely clueless about most of the features, or how to properly use the different types of lens, etc. I'm probably gonna take a photography class to learn the basics, or just go online and try to learn on my own.

Here is the Amazon link to the kit that I got, which brought a ton of accessories, lenses and a carrying case: www.amazon.com/Canon-EOS-Rebel…

Here is what came with the kit:
  • Canon EOS Rebel T5 EF-S Body - Canon Zoom Wide Angle-Normal EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Autofocus Lens - Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III Autofocus Lens
  • 58mm 2X Professional Telephoto Lens - High Definition 58mm Wide Angle Lens - Digital DSLR Auto Power Slave Flash - Transcend 16GB Class 10 SDHC Card -Transcend 8 GB Class 10 SDHC Flash Memory Card
  • 50" Photo Video Quality Tripod - Water Resistant Shock Proof Camcorder & SLR Camera Case - RC-60 Remote Control - 3 Piece Filter Kit (UV-CPL-FLD) 58mm - 58mm Ultraviolet UV Protector Filter
  • Hi-Speed SD USB Card Reader - Camera & Lens 3 Piece Cleaning Kit - Tri-fold Memory Card Wallet - LCD Screen Protectors (Clear) - Table Top Tripod - PHOTO4LSS CLEANING CLOTH
I'm still learning everything, but I started using the camera to take photos of my 1/6 scale custom figures and stuff I wanted to share on this account, BUT...for the final product, I really want to take like PROFESSIONAL quality photos (well, as professional quality as I can possibly take).

I went on YouTube and tried to learn as much as I could regarding photography, lighting, and what I discovered to be very important, light diffusion.

The issue I'm still having is, trying to decide whether to try to "build" a light box & lighting kit, or buy a cheap one on Amazon. Anything really professional is SUPER expensive, so the cheap ones get tons of bad reviews, and it makes me wonder if it's gonna be a waste of money getting a cheap light box, and cheap photography lighting.

So far, after reading tons of Amazon reviews, I feel like this Cowboy Studio lighting kit is really good for $54.99, but I'd still need to get a light box or background.

Then, you have all these different cheap light boxes, some of which seem to get really bad reviews, but I know I def need something to diffuse light, so...make one or buy one? I can't decide. Here is a Square Perfect 30-inch Light Tent Photo Cube Softbox for $35.17 that seems somewhat ok to get the job done, with somewhat ok reviews:

BUT...that's $90.16 TOTAL plus taxes/shipping just to take nice photos of my 1/6 custom figures!!! (I have Amazon Prime, but still...)

:iconimdeadplz:

Is it worth it? Everyone on Amazon reviews says that's pretty standard to get your cheapest lighting kit put together, but... that just seems like a LOT of money just to take some photos of 12" figures (1/6 scale hobby).

Maybe some people on here with Photography knowledge can help or suggest something to help me out?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm excited to share my custom OOAK 12" figures already!

Thanks for reading.

I have one of those cube light boxes, can't say I really like it though honestly... The shap is really ackward and hard to use, for me anyway. The open part is too small, and not as functional as the home made one in the video you posted there... They have an entire side open so they can move around and get angles on. Personally though, I like taking photos on days the sun is covered by clouds, that's something they tell you to do in photography classes because its naturally diffused light. But yeah, looking at your options, I'd say making one looks miles more functional than the cheapy cube version I have. That's just my two cents though, I'm not a professional photographer, I'm just an artist lol.
